Porcelain Veneers

Teeth that are broken, chipped, misaligned or discolored are unsightly, and can lead to feelings of self-consciousness or embarrassment. Fortunately, there is a way that you can have your smile back. Porcelain veneers are a means of covering the front of your teeth with thin shells that can alter the shape, size, length and color of your teeth.

The Procedure

Pocelain VeneersPorcelain veneers will usually require three visits to Dr. Curtiss. The first is for a consultation, and the other two are to have the veneers created and then applied to your teeth. We’ll take x-rays, and make impressions of your teeth as well.

When it comes time to prepare your teeth for the porcelain veneers, Dr. Curtiss will scrape a small amount of enamel off your natural teeth – no more than half a millimeter’s thickness. This is so that once the veneers are applied, your teeth won’t look bigger than they should. Next, your impressions will be sent to a dental lab so that the veneers can be created – this usually takes a week or two.

Once the veneers are received from the lab, Dr. Curtiss will place them on your teeth to make sure they fit properly and are the proper color. Then he will trim them, and adjust the color if necessary, using the same cement that will be used to hold the veneers in place. Finally, your teeth will be etched – roughened up to ensure that the veneers will bond effectively. Then the cement is applied, and the veneers are attached. A special light is used to activate chemicals in the cement that allow the veneers to bond securely. Once the excess cement has been removed, Dr. Curtiss will make some final adjustments to be sure that you have a comfortable bite.

The BenefitsVeneers

No one will ever know that you have veneers – they look completely natural. They also feel totally natural, so you’ll never have to worry about any discomfort, or feeling as though you have foreign material in your mouth. Porcelain veneers also resist staining. They’re amazingly strong, and don’t require any specialized care – simply brush and floss the same way you always have.

The procedure itself is completely painless, and you can resume ordinary activities immediately. You can eat all the foods you love, and drink hot or icy cold beverages without having to wait. You may find, however, since the process does require removing some of your tooth enamel, that your teeth are a bit more sensitive to cold and heat than they were before. However, any discomfort should be minimal, and there are several commonly available toothpastes that are specially formulated to ease sensitive teeth.
